A little bit about me...

Hello! I'm Kirsten Mullin, RMT, OCT

Welcome!

I am a Registered Massage Therapist serving the Barrie area, with over 20 years of clinical experience. Since graduating with Academic Honours from Elmcrest College of Applied Health Sciences in 2005, I have worked in a variety of clinical settings and have built my practice in the Barrie community. My educational background also includes studies in Kinesiology and Health Sciences at York University. I am registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) and am an active member of the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario (RMTAO).

My interest in health care began at a young age through my involvement in sports, particularly track and field and karate. While training for my Black Belt, I experienced injuries that introduced me firsthand to the benefits of massage therapy. At just 13 years old, my massage therapist opened my eyes to the diversity of the profession and the potential of hands-on treatment—an experience that ultimately helped shape my career.

Continued learning has remained an important part of my practice. Over the years, I have pursued extensive continuing education in areas including myofascial release, orthopaedic assessment, low back and common injury assessment and treatment, advanced anatomy with cadaver specimens, therapeutic cupping, craniosacral techniques, pregnancy and postpartum care, core and pelvic floor rehabilitation, and MPS Scar Release Therapy, among many others.

More recently, my professional studies have developed a strong focus on scars, scar healing and the effects that surgical procedures can have on the tissues beneath the scar. While Cesarean birth rehabilitation continues to be an important part of my practice, my interest in scar care extends to both new and longstanding scars from a variety of surgeries and injuries. I continue to study scar formation, tissue healing, anatomy, surgical approaches, assessment, mobility restrictions and the clinical reasoning involved in determining when and how manual therapy may be appropriate.

This area of study has also inspired the next stage of my career: education.

Alongside my massage therapy practice, I am completing my teacher education in Technological Education with Health Care as my teachable. I currently hold an Ontario Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration and am gaining experience teaching secondary-school Health Care Technology. Combining more than two decades of clinical experience with education has given me an exciting opportunity to bring real-world health care knowledge into the classroom while continuing to develop as an educator.

I am also developing continuing education for Registered Massage Therapists and other manual therapy professionals focused on scar assessment, healing and hands-on scar care. My goal is to help practitioners move beyond simply learning individual scar techniques and develop stronger clinical reasoning—understanding the surgery or injury, the tissues involved, stage of healing, precautions, assessment findings, treatment goals and appropriate progression of care.

In the clinic, I enjoy treating a wide variety of conditions and individuals. My treatments take a hands-on and individualized approach and may incorporate Swedish massage, myofascial techniques, trigger point therapy, joint mobilization, stretching, scar tissue techniques, therapeutic cupping, fascial tools, MPS Therapy, remedial exercise and core and pelvic floor rehabilitation. I have a particular interest in surgical scar care, Cesarean rehabilitation, pregnancy and postpartum massage, and supporting individuals as they regain comfort, mobility and confidence following surgery or major physical changes.

After more than 20 years in practice, I still believe there is always more to learn. My clinical work, teaching and continuing education development now complement one another—what I learn through research and education strengthens my clinical practice, while decades of working directly with clients give me practical experiences and perspectives that I can bring into the classroom.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue developing my work in scar assessment and rehabilitation, expand my role in health care education, and contribute to continuing education within the massage therapy profession.

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors, gardening, baking, creating and staying active.
